UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- The international community should step up efforts to find political solutions to hotspot issues to foster an environment favorable for women's development, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.
Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), made the remarks at a UN Security Council debate focusing on women, peace and security, at which the 15-member body adopted a resolution that highlights women's role in peace and security.
Liu said the current international security situation remains complex and grave, and there is a long way to go for the international community in protecting women in conflict.
"The international community should stand firmly by the value of peace, development and win-win cooperation, and vigorously take forward the political process of the relevant conflict-affected countries," said Liu, adding that security protection and humanitarian assistance to conflict-affected women should be guaranteed.
"Their voices and demands need to be heard," Liu said, noting that effective measures need to be taken to ensure that women fully enjoy the right of participation in every stage of the peace process.
Highlighting the necessity of removing the root causes of conflicts in relevant countries, Liu said the international community should help conflict-ridden countries to conduct post-conflict construction with a focus on social and economic development.
"The international community should provide assistance and technical support for the developing countries to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment," he said, adding that "attention should be paid to provide guidance to women's organizations and civil society in playing a positive and constructive role."
Liu also called for the elimination of discrimination, bias and acts of violence against women, saying the international community should vigorously promote gender equality and remove bias that hinders women's peace and development.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing. On Sept. 27, China co-hosted with the United Nations a global summit on women's empowerment, at which China made new pledges to contribute financially to women's empowerment as well as through different projects.
China will fully implement these new commitments, Liu said. "China is ready to work with all parties in our continued unremitting efforts to promote the implementation of the goals on women, peace and security, and to push for a greater development of the global cause of women."
