HELSINKI, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Finnish police said that they have seized millions of euros worth of drugs, the largest ever in Finland, reported Finnish News Agency STT on Tuesday.
The unearthed drug ring was suspected of smuggling high-grade amphetamines and hashish from the Netherlands to the Tampere region, southwest Finland.
A total of 54 kg of exceptionally high-grade amphetamines was seized by police in the municipality of Nokia in May this year. This amount corresponds to approximately 110 kg of normal amphetamines and 540,000 doses of use, according to the police.
Jari Raty, Detective Chief Inspector from the Central Criminal Police Department of Finland, told STT that it is the largest single seizure of amphetamines in the criminal history of Finland. The street value of the drugs is estimated to nearly 3 million euros.
Raty said that the major seizures indicate that the demand of drugs in Finland is strong.
The gang consists of a dozen members from Morocco, the Netherlands, Algeria, Russia and Latvia. Nine of them have been in custody now.
