COLOMBO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua)-- At least three policemen and six civilians were injured when violent protests broke out in Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka on Monday when local residents in the area were demanding for safe drinking water.
The protestors had been blocking a main road in the area, obstructing traffic for over three hours, when the anti-riot police squad charged them with baton after they could not be convinced to leave the area peacefully, local media reported.
The protestors had also attacked a passenger bus when the situation went out of control.
Police have arrested 11 people by Monday afternoon and had launched an investigation into the incident. The injured had been rushed to a nearby state hospital.
