NANCHANG, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Three miners have been confirmed dead and seven others remain trapped after a gas explosion at a coal mine on Friday night in east China's Jiangxi Province.

The provincial coal mine safety supervision department said the accident, in Yongji Coal Mine in Shangrao County, happened at around 10 p.m. The explosion caused a section of the shaft to collapse.

Rescuers are still trying to reach the trapped miners.

Initial enquiries show that the mine's safety license expired on Jan. 9 and was still being renewed at present, said Shangguan Qing, head of the county's coal mine administration bureau, adding that the coal mine is suspected of illegal mining.

The owner of the privately-owned mine has been taken in for questioning.
