VALLETTA, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The number of the injured people climbed to 26 as a white Porsche 918 Spyder partaking in a motorshow in Malta deviated from track and ran into the crowd on Sunday afternoon, five victims are in critical condition.

The incident happened at about 14:00 (1200 GMT) at the Malta International Airport Hal Farrug area, where the annual motoring event Paqpaqli Ghall-Istrina took place.

A number of ambulances are currently on site treating the wounded, while two helicopters were deployed to transport the wounded.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr. Chris Fearne said the injured were suffering severe head injuries, multiple fractures and abdominal injuries, among others. A number of operations will be held in the coming hours. Psychologists are helping the victims.

Organized by the Office of the President in collaboration with a core team of volunteers, the Paqpaqli Ghall-Istrina is the biggest annual motoring event in Malta, mainly aiming at raising funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund.

President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca was seen at the scene shortly after the incident, she also put off a trip to Britain in order to visit the injured at Mater Dei Hospital.

The archipelago's Prime Minister Joseph Muscat visited the hospital as soon as he landed in Malta from his U.S. trip.

The police urged people not to approach Hal Farrug and visitors were kept well away. This was the first ever serious accident happened at the popular motorshow.

A spokesman for the organisers said the cause of the accident would have to be investigated, pointing to the possibility that the car or wheel may have developed a fault.
