RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The 17th Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, largest annual event of its kind in Brazil, opened Thursday, attracting 250 movies from some 60 countries.

Meetings and debates such as Cine Encontro events are important parts of the festival, offering film fans opportunities to talk with actors, producers and directors face to face.

The festival kicks off with the premiere of a documentary called "Chico", featuring one of Brazil's most famous musicians Chico Buarque.

From Friday until Oct. 14, several movie theaters will exhibit different films every day, in which fans often run movie marathons, watching several films from early afternoon to late night.

Local movies will compete for Redentor (Redeemer) Award, named after Rio's iconic Christ Redeemer statue, with prizes divided by categories and lengths of films.

The festival includes various sections with different themes such as Rio, homosexuality, Mexican Noir, Japanese animation, as well as a special homage to Orson Welles, an elite American actor and director whose famous film Citizen Kane was regarded as one of the all-time greatest works.
