Iran says number of nationals killed in Mecca stampede rises to 464

English.news.cn   2015-10-01 15:48:17

TEHRAN, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Iran said Thursday that the number of its nationals killed in the stampede near Mecca has risen to 464, local media reported.

More than 241 Iranian remain unaccounted for in the tragedy in Mina near Mecca, state-run IRNA said.

Fourteen Iranians injured in the stampede are still being treated in Saudi hospitals, IRNA said, quoting the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, which said the full list of those killed will be released soon.

This year, 64,000 Iranians travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj rituals.

Tehran has blamed Saudi "inefficiency and mismanagement" in handling the largest gathering of Muslims for the tragedy.

Saudi authorities put the total number of pilgrims killed in Mina at 769.

The Saudi Interior Ministry said the stampede appeared to have been caused by two waves of pilgrims meeting at an intersection.
