UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York and vowed to further coordination on international affairs.

China attaches great importance to the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with Russia and is willing to work with Russia to ensure the success of a series of high-level visits during the year and the various conferences and exhibitions, said Wang.

As two permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia maintain close communication and coordination in UN affairs and major international and regional issues, he said.

The two sides should work together to defend the UN Charter and the basic norms of international relations, support the United Nations' active role in international affairs, promote the peace settlement of the Syria crisis, the Iranian nuclear issue and Korean Peninsula issue, he said.

Lavrov said that this year Russia and China successfully held the World War II victory celebrations, which reflected the spirit of solidarity and showed that the World War II history cannot be forgotten.

Russia and China have a similar stance on many international and regional issues and maintain close communication and cooperation in UN affairs. Russia will further strengthen coordination and cooperation with China, said Lavrov.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in Syria and the Korean Peninsula.
