Cathay Pacific flight from Perth to HK diverts to Indonesia after engine fire

HONG KONG, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Cathay Pacific confirmed on Friday that its flight from Perth, Australia, to Hong Kong has narrowly averted a disaster by making an emergency landing in Denpasar, Indonesia, following an engine fire.

The airline said the number two engine of the plane, carrying 251 passengers, was shut down due to a defect.

"There was no fire on board. All passengers and crew area safe and unharmed," the airline said in a statement, adding, "The aircraft landed safely in Denpasar. Fire services met the aircraft on arrival."

"The airline is currently investigating the incident."

Passengers on board the flight CX170, which departed Perth at 11:55 p.m. Thursday, described hearing a "huge bang" and witnessing sparks and flames coming from outside of the plane while the flight was en route.

"Mid-flight, we heard a loud bang and the plane started to shake, all the lights went out and I looked to the window and have just seen some flames and some sparks -- the wing and the motor was on fire," passenger Joel Sirna said, quoted by Perth Radio. Enditem
