RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazil great Paulo Roberto Falcao has been appointed coach of Sport Recife, according to local media reports on Sunday.
The Globo newspaper said the 61-year-old agreed to a deal after meeting with the club's president Joao Humberto Martorelli late last week. Sport were expected to confirm the appointment on Monday.
Sport's coaching position became vacant when Eduardo Baptista left on Wednesday to join Rio de Janeiro side Fluminense.
Despite failing to win a World Cup, Falcao is widely considered among Brazil's greatest ever players.
He was part of the Selecao's celebrated midfield - also featuring Zico, Socrates, Junior and Toninho Cerezo - that lost to eventual winners Italy at the quarterfinals of the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
As a coach Falcao has been less successful, briefly leading Brazil's national team in 1990 and 1991 before unspectacular spells in charge of America (Mexico), Internacional (Brazil), Japan and Bahia (Brazil).
Sport Recife are currently 11th in Brazil's Serie A standings with 37 points from 27 matches.
