Vasco keep alive survival hopes

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Vasco da Gama kept alive their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 2-1 victory over Sport Recife in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

Nene and Rafael Vaz scored either side of halftime for the hosts while Elber was on target for Sport at the Maracana stadium.

The result lifted the four-time champions off the bottom of the table, ahead of Joinville on goal difference, while Sport fell to 11th.

In Sao Paulo, former Brazil international midfielder Jadson scored both goals in Corinthians' 2-0 victory over 10-man Santos.

Werley was sent off for a second caution just after halftime and David Braz received a straight red card eight minutes from time.

In other matches on Sunday, Goias defeated Joinville 3-0, Avai overcame Sao Paulo 2-1, Atletico Mineiro beat Flamengo 4-1, Cruzeiro won 2-0 at Chapecoense and Coritiba accounted for Atletico Paranaense 2-0.
