China wants increased UN Security Council role for developing countries

BEIJING, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday said the UN Security Council should increase representation of developing countries, especially African countries to better implement the UN Charter.

"The reform, concerning the future of the UN and common interests of all member states, needs a package of solutions acceptable to all sides through broad negotiations," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei at a daily press briefing.

He made the remarks as the 69th session of the UN General Assembly on Monday decided to continue intergovernmental negotiations on Security Council reform in next session.

"The decision shows that all sides, despite disputes, still hope to maintain the basic negotiation principle that member countries should play a leading role and the reform should be based on the stance and suggestions of the member countries," Hong said.

China hopes the negotiations will "turn over a new leaf" in the upcoming 70th session, said the spokesman.
