SINGAPORE, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- The National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have risen to be among the top 15 universities in the world for the first time, according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings for 2015/2016 released Tuesday.
NUS ranked 12th for QS's global university rankings, rising 10 places from 2014, while NTU followed NUS in the ranking, jumping 26 places compared with previous year's rankings. Both universities have surpassed traditional Ivy League and European universities such as Yale, John Hopkins, Cornell and King's College London this year.
The latest QS ranking also places NUS among the world's top 10 universities for engineering and technology, social sciences and management, natural sciences; and in the global top 20 for arts and humanities, and life sciences and medicine.
Engineering and technology faculties of NTU were also ranked 6th in the world this year, while natural sciences was in 15th place.
Ben Sowter, QS head of Research, said what Singapore has achieved in its first 50 years of independence is nothing short of staggering. The engine room for that development has been and remains the cultural, political and financial emphasis placed on education.
According to its press release on Tuesday, QS adopted a modified methodology in measuring research impact for "fairer evaluations for universities with a strong profile in areas with lower research activity, such as arts, humanities and social sciences" in the latest rankings.
The latest QS ranked a total of 891 universities around the world on academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty student ratio, and proportions of international students and international faculty. It surveyed 76,798 academics and 44,226 employers, and more than 3,500 institutions were considered.

SINGAPORE, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Curtin University on Tuesday confirmed that its official website has been attacked by hackers who claimed to come from the Islamic State on Sunday, Channel NewsAsia reported.
"Curtin University became aware on Sunday that its Curtin Singapore website was defaced and immediately disabled the website, " said Ian Callahan, corporate services vice-president in response to media queries. Full story
Singapore's university launches China Business Center
SINGAPORE, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National University of Singapore launched a China Business Center on Wednesday to help deepen understanding of the business environment in China.
Established by the Business School of the university, the center is aimed to provide policy makers, practitioners and academics with a world-class resource center and research platform for China business and education, the university said. Full story
