BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) -- Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the German city of Dresden to send a message of welcome to refugees. This comes after a string of violent anti-migrant protests in the region.Germanyhas relatively liberal asylum laws. It's set to receive the largest share of migrants coming to Europe this year, an estimated 800,000 people. That's about one percent of its total population.
The crowds on Saturday marched peacefully through the eastern city under the watch of police in riot gear. Afterwards, several hundred participants in the rally gathered in the nearby town of Heidenau, where violent protests erupted last weekend over the opening of a new refugee centre. Protesters said such a tragedy must not be repeated.
Eva Mendl, the protester said:"We are here because what's happening in Germany, and in particular in Saxony, is unbearable. Hate against refugees, who come here because they can't live anywhere else, who lived through wars. It shouldn't happen in a rich country."
