SYDNEY, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Australian authorities have started tagging Great White Sharks as part of new measures to protect coastal communities along the east coast following a spate of attacks in recent months.

The New South Wales (NSW) state government confirmed on Thursday that two 2.2-meter female Great Whites have been tagged as part of a project to tag and track sharks to better understand their movements and behavior patterns.

The project will also involve on-water surveillance.

A Japanese surfer was mauled to death in early February on the northern NSW coast, while 12 others have been victims to serious shark attacks in recent months.

The outcomes of a review into available shark deterrent technology are expected in late September.
