LISBON, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- People who mistreat or abandon animals in Portugal will now be banned from owning pets for up to five years, according to local media reports on Wednesday.
The new law will also close pet establishments who harm animals and will suspend administrative permissions as well as the authorization of licenses relating to animals, for up to three years.
Portugal already punishes mistreatment of pets "without legitimate motives" with prison sentences. Enditem
