XI'AN, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- The families of 58 people who died or remain missing after a landslide in Shaanxi Province, northwest China, last week have signed a compensation agreement.
The local government and Shaanxi Wuzhou Mining Co. Ltd. will pay 600,000 yuan (about 94,000 U.S. dollars) to the families of each of the 58 people. Compensation has been given to 50 families so far, a rescue headquarters spokesperson said Saturday.
The landslide hit the living quarters of the mining company's Shanyang County branch as well as three rural homes in the early hours of Aug. 12.
Nine people have been confirmed dead and 56 others remain missing.
The search for the missing continued on Saturday. Monitoring for secondary disasters continues at sites nearby and a health team are disinfecting the landslide site three times a day to prevent the spread of disease, according to Gao.
