36 killed in truck boming at Baghdad marketplace

English.news.cn   2015-08-13 14:18:23

BAGHDAD, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- A booby-trapped truck detonated on Thursday morning at a busy marketplace in eastern Baghdad, leaving at least 36 killed and more than 75 others wounded, a police source told Xinhua.

The blast occurred at dawn when the truck packed with explosives and camouflaged with vegetables detonated at Jamilah wholesale market at the Shiite bastion of Sadr City district in eastern Baghdad, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The huge blast destroyed many shops and stalls and set fire to several civilian cars, the source said, adding that the security forces cordoned off the area to secure the scene.

The toll could rise as many of the wounded were in critical conditions, while ambulances and civilian vehicles evacuated the victims to several hospitals and medical centers.

The security situation in Iraq has drastically deteriorated since June 2014, when bloody clashes broke out between security forces and Islamic State militants.
