SINGAPORE, July 16 (Xinhua) -- After almost two-week long investigation, Singapore's train service operator SMRT on Thursday has narrowed down the likely cause of the massive disruption during evening peak hour of the July 7, SMRT announced on Thursday.
"Intensive, round-the-clock investigations and re-enactments of the incident point to the likelihood that the insulation of the third rail could have affected the supply of traction power which in turn, led to the tripping of the Touch Voltage Protection Relay among multiple stretches," SMRT said.
Train services on two crowded lines was disrupted for more than two hours, and it's estimated that more than 250,000 commuters may have been affected, with no light or air-conditioning. A market analyst has said earlier that SMRT could face a fine of up to 50 million Singapore dollars following incident.
