Australian job vacancies rise: official report

SYDNEY, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of job vacancies in Australia rose 2.1 percent in the May quarter, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported on Thursday.

The total number of vacancies in the three months to May 31 was 155,800, a 2.1 percent increase on the revised February quarter reading of 152,700.

There are now 6.3 percent more job vacancies, on a seasonally adjusted basis, than a year ago.

They are now at their highest point in two-and-a-half years.

There were 143,300 private sector job vacancies in the May quarter, up 2.8 percent on the previous quarter.

But the number of public sector vacancies in the quarter dropped, seasonally-adjusted, by 5.5 percent to 12,500.
