BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China is building a supercomputer to track climate change and forecast extreme weather, a team of scientists announced Wednesday.
As part of a broader plan called "Interpret the Globe," the supercomputer is expected to analyze a huge amount of data about the atmosphere, the oceans and the earth's crust.
Analysis of data collected by China's meteorological satellites, which account for half of the world's total orbiters of this kind, will provide technological support to global climate change negotiations.
"Previous studies in this field were dominated by western researchers and are sometimes unfair and biased. Our own study will give China a bigger say in future climate change talks," said Zeng Qingcun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The CAS is now collaborating with a Chinese IT company Sugon on the supercomputer, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2015. Enditem
