Profile: Co-chairs of key China-U.S. dialogue and consultation

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and U.S. officials will hold another round of key dialogue and consultation this week in Washington, where they will discuss issues ranging from security to the economy and cultural exchanges.

The 7th China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue (S&ED) will be co-chaired by Vice Premier Wang Yang and State Councilor Yang Jiechi on the Chinese side, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on the American side.

The two countries will also hold the 6th China-U.S. High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE), which will be co-chaired by Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Kerry.

Following is a brief introduction to the co-chairs of the talks:

ON THE CHINESE SIDE

Liu Yandong, born in November 1945, studied political theory at Jilin University and holds a doctorate in law. Liu is the only female among the four Chinese vice premiers. When she was state councilor from 2008 to 2013, Liu was in charge of national affairs of education, science, culture, and sports.

Wang Yang, born in March 1955, holds a master's degree in engineering. As the youngest vice premier, Wang is the only vice premier born after the founding of the People's Republic. He served as secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China from 2007 to 2012.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi, born in May 1950, is an experienced diplomat and served as foreign minister between 2007 and 2013. He was ambassador to the United States between 2000 and 2004.

ON THE U.S. SIDE

John Kerry, born in December 1943, graduated from Yale with a bachelor's degree in arts. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Kerry, who has rich experience in dealing with Middle East affairs, took office as the country's 68th secretary of state in 2013.

Jacob Lew, born in August 1955, graduated from Harvard in 1978 with a bachelor's degree and obtained a law degree from Georgetown University in 1983. Lew served as budget chief in the administration of former President Bill Clinton. He became treasury secretary in 2013 in the administration of Barack Obama. Enditem
