SYDNEY, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Former stand-in captain of the Australian cricket team Steve Smith was named the world's best Test batsman, the International Cricket Council's (ICC) latest player rankings stated on Monday.
Smith jumped to No. 1 in the ICC's rankings after his brilliant first-innings 199 earned him man-of-the-match honors in Australia's second-Test triumph over the West Indies in Jamaica on Monday morning.
The Australian captain-in-waiting leapfrogged Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara and South Africa's AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla to become the first Australian to top the Test rankings since captain Michael Clarke did so in 2012.
