UN environment chief eyes closer cooperation with Xinhua on social media

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) wants closer cooperation with Xinhua News Agency on social media to promote environmental protection, its executive director said on Wednesday.

"I must be very grateful because through many frequent interviews and contacts with Xinhua, UNEP is today very well appreciated and respected institution in China and united with many friends and followers in the social networks," said Achim Steiner, who also serves as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations.

During his visit to Xinhua headquarters in Beijing, Steiner met with Xinhua President Cai Mingzhao and signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation.

"I am also quite excited about the leadership in the world of new media," said Steiner, who noted Xinhua's recently launched platform called New China on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, and expressed hope in "the enormous potential" of new media.

Noting that Xinhua and UNEP have held a great number of public welfare campaigns and exerted great influence internationally, Cai expressed his willingness to further such cooperative ties.
