Women, girls disproportionately affected by Nepal quake: UN relief arm

English.news.cn   2015-05-23 04:16:49

UNITED NATIONS, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Friday that women and girls were disproportionately affected by the recent earthquakes in Nepal, citing figures showing that 55 percent of casualties were women and girls.

"New data released yesterday shows that women and girls were disproportionately affected by the earthquake in Nepal, as is often the case in natural disasters," deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said at a daily news briefing here.

"The United Nations is working on providing protection support for women and girls, including providing them with dignity kits, and setting up safe spaces for women to get together, receive counseling, safe shelter and legal aid," Haq said.

Devastating earthquakes jolted Nepal in late April left more than 8,000 people dead and 17,000 others injured.
