HAVANA, May 13 (PL) -- A Cuban-made lung cancer vaccine has been proven to be safe and effective in nearly two decades of trials and treatments, according to Havana-based news agency Prensa Latina.

The Cimavax-EGF vaccine can extend the lives of those with lung cancer and improve their quality of life, oncologist and lead researcher Elia Neninger said during the 5th International Cimavax-EGF Congress, inaugurated Tuesday in Havana.

The specialized treatment specifically fights lung cancer in the advanced stages and characterized by large tumors, and in patients who have already undergone and reacted well to initial chemotherapy, said Neninger.

"They are the ones who can most benefit" from the vaccine, she said.

The medical congress, which concluded Wednesday, drew specialists from Serbia, Peru, the Dominican Republic and other nations.
