MADRID, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The number of Spanish victims who died in the Germanwings flight 4U9525 crash was revised by the Spanish government on Thursday to 50.
The number of Spanish victims had previously been set at 51 after originally being established at 49. The government stresses the latest number is not definitive.
The confusion appears to have arisen as one of the victims thought to be of Spanish nationality was actually someone who had been resident in Spain for over 20 years.
"It is a sensitive issue and we wish to remain prudent," explained Spanish Secretary of State for Security Francisco Martinez.
The government confirmed that the majority of the families of the victims are now on their way to the crash site in France, while a four-man forensic science team is also traveling to France.
Martinez stressed that the investigation into the cause of the accident was France's responsibility, adding Spain was acting in a "responsible" manner by not adding to further speculation.
