At least five injured in Al- Shabaab attack in Kenya's border town

English.news.cn   2015-03-13 20:15:51

MANDERA, Kenya, March 13 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were critically injured on Friday after unknown gunmen attacked a convoy of Mandera Governor Ali Roba on the Arabia-Omar Jilo road near the border with Somalia, officials said.

The governor who was on his way to a local town for a function in the county had just passed the area when unknown gunmen hurled a rocket-propelled grenade at his convoy.

"The governor is safe, but there are people who have been injured in the attack," a police officer who declined to be named told Xinhua.

The police said the security officers have launched manhunt for the attackers.

The incident happened a few kilometres from Arabiya, where 28 people travelling in a Nairobi-bound commuter bus were killed by Al-Shabaab militants on November 22, 2014.

Security agencies are still pursuing the stolen vehicle, but it's unclear if there were Kenyans on board.

The attack came a day after the killing of the three top militants including Adan Garaar in Bardhere in Somalia in a drone attack. It also comes days after new IG Joseph Boinett, an intelligence expert was sworn in.

Garaar was killed along with two other militants after their car was targeted near the town of Bardhere.
