BUENOS AIRES, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Argentine tennis player Leonardo Mayer and Brazil's Joao Souza on Sunday played the longest match in Davis Cup singles category, which lasted six hours and 42 minutes.

Mayer defeated Souza 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 5-7 and 15-13, in the match played at Tecnopolis clay court in Villa Martinelli, in the northern region of Greater Buenos Aires.

The Mayer-Souza match broke the record set by U.S. John McEnroe and Swedish Mats Wilander in 1982 in a five-set game that lasted six hours and 22 minutes.

So far the longest match in Davis Cup doubles was the 2013 game between Czech players Tomas Berdych/Lukas Rosol and Swiss players Marco Chiudinelli/Stanislas Wawrinka, which lasted seven hours and one minute.
