UNITED NATIONS, March 6 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese envoy to the United Nations on Friday urged a new Security Council resolution on Syria's chemical weapons be implemented "in an earnest, comprehensive and precise manner."

The statement came as Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, addressed a Council meeting on Syria after he voted in favor of the resolution on behalf of the Chinese delegation.

The Resolution 2209, which was adopted by 14 of the 15 Council members with Venezuela abstaining in the vote, strongly condemned any use of any toxic chemical, such as chlorine, as a weapon in the Syria.

"China's position on the chemical weapons issue is clear and consistent," Wang said. "We resolutely oppose anyone to use chemical weapons under any circumstances, support the joint efforts of all parties concerned to fully implement the decisions of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the Security Council resolutions on Syria's chemical weapons."

In this process, the authority of Chemical Weapons Convention and OPCW should be maintained, he said, noting that the Security Council should remain united and speak in a unanimous voice all the time, which is significant for the success of the relevant work.

Based on the above position, Wang said, China actively participated in the consultation of the Security Council Resolution 2209, and vigorously pushed for consensus by the relevant parties.

"We hope the relevant parties implement Resolution 2209 in an earnest, comprehensive and precise manner," he said. "Any further actions taken by the Council on Syria's chemical weapons should be separately discussed and decided upon by the Council members."

"We hope that Resolution 2209 will be conducive to further fostering Council's consensus on Syria's chemical weapons, facilitate the early completion of the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons, and provide new impetus to the political settlement of the Syrian issue," he stressed.

The envoy added that China will continue to play its active and constructive role for a comprehensive, lasting and proper solution of the Syrian issue.
