UN mission arrives in Syria's Aleppo

DAMASCUS, March 3 (Xinhua) -- A UN mission from the Damascus-based office of the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, arrived in Syria's northern province of Aleppo on Tuesday, a source in Aleppo governorate told Xinhua.

The mission arrived Tuesday morning in the al-Bolman hotel in the city of Aleppo, and headed later to meet the governor of Aleppo Mohammad Olabi, the source said.

The source said the mission will meet with local dignitaries of the city of Aleppo regarding Mistura's "freeze battle plan," proposed recently to establish a cessation of battles in the key Syrian city.

On Saturday, Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem agreed with de Mistura on sending a UN mission to Aleppo, state news agency SANA reported.

In October 2014, de Mistura put forward an action plan for Syria which proposed to "freeze" fighting in local areas to facilitate aid entrance and to pave the way for peace talks.

Earlier this month, de Mistura said there is "no illusion," but still "some hope" for a political solution to the ongoing crisis in Syria.

Analysts say sending a mission from de Mistura's office to Aleppo aims apparently to check the situation on ground ahead of possible implementation of the "freeze battle plan.
