BRUSSELS, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Leaders of the European Union (EU) will meet on Thursday to discuss the situation in Ukraine, the EU's fight against terrorism, and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

The heads of state or government are expected to discuss the latest diplomatic efforts and developments in the conflict in Ukraine. Ahead of the debate, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is expected to update the EU leaders on the situation in Ukraine.

The EU leaders will also discuss ways to reinforce the EU's and member states' action against terrorism threats.

"They will do so with the aim of striking the right balance between security and freedom. A statement guiding work over the months to come should be agreed," an official statement said.

As for the Economic and Monetary Union, leaders are expected to discuss mechanisms for stronger economic policy coordination, convergence and solidarity.

Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank (ECB) and Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the Eurogroup, will participate in the discussion.

The ongoing negotiations within the Eurogroup on financial assistance to Greece will be debriefed by Dijsselbloem. Enditem
