DHAKA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's anti-government protesters took to the streets and fought pitched battles with law enforcers in many districts, as the main opposition alliance enforced nationwide blockade on Tuesday morning.

Dozens of people were reportedly injured.

Four vehicles were smashed or set on fire during the hours of blockade in Dhaka Tuesday.

The traffic on Dhaka streets remained relatively thin as most private vehicles were kept indoors.

Handmade bombs have been exploded in old part of Dhaka. No casualties have been reported from the incident.

The ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia, who remained cordoned off inside her office since Saturday night, has announced indefinite blockade across the country and urged her 20-party alliance men to continue movement demanding fresh parliament polls under a non- party caretaker government.

Khaleda Zia made the announcement after she was barred to attend her alliance's anti-government rally on Jan. 5 in capital Dhaka.

Tense political standoff over the opposition alliance's demand for a fresh polls under a non-party caretaker government system culminated with both the ruling and opposition parties calling rallies on Jan. 5 in Dhaka to stage showdown.

Khaleda Zia on Wednesday night at a press briefing tabled a seven-point proposal to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government for an immediate "inclusive general elections" under a non-party caretaker government.

Khaleda Zia's alliance has been waging mass protests demanding for fresh national elections in the country under a non-party caretaker government.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ruling Bangladesh Awami League party has already rejected the proposals.
