Nikkei slips but ends at 15-year annual closing high

TOKYO, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks edged down 1.57 percent Tuesday on worries over Greece's financial bailout, but still closed at its highest annual level in 15 years.

The 225-issue benchmark lost 279.07 points, from Monday at 17, 450.77, the highest year-end level since 1999.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 17.16 points, or 1.20 percent, at 1, 407.51.

Major decliners included precision instrument, brokerage and electric machinery issues.

The turnover was 1,617.2 billion yen (about 13.43 billion U.S. dollars).

Japan's financial markets will close from Dec. 31 to Jan. 4 for the New Year festival.
