Stone Buddha statues of Tubo Period found 1st time in Tibet

    BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Nineteen rock line-engraving statues belonging to the Tubo Period (during the 7th-9th century) have been found in Tibet, according to archeologists.

    Since it is the first time that such statues are found in Tibet, the statues are regarded as significant to studying the spread of Buddhism in eastern Tibet.

    These statues were found in Randui Village, Chamdo Prefecture, eastern Tibet, by archeologists from the Shaanxi Provincial Archeology Institute, Tibet Autonomous Regional Cultural Relics Protection Research Center and the Archeological Team of Northwest University.

    Zhang Jianlin, deputy director of the Shaanxi Provincial Archeology Institute, said that the statues feature Buddha Vairocana and Bodhisattvas.

    The modeling and clothing of the Buddhas feature the characteristics of Buddha statues of the Tubo Period.

20 sites of Tubo rock paintings found in Lhasa

    BEIJING, Oct. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Forty-two cultural relics have been discovered recently in Lhasa's Damxung County, including 20 sites of cave rock paintings dating from the Tubo Dynasty, according to the Lhasa's Cultural Relics Bureau.

    The Tubo Kingdom founded in 600 AD is the first regime with a history of 200 years in ancient Tibet.  Full story

Buddhist stone carvings found in Qinghai's Tibetan area 

    BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhuanet) -- Buddhist stone carvings over a large area have been discovered in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, southwestern Qinghai Province, according to the Qinghai Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics.

¡¡ Experts believe that the new discovery will shed light on the study of the history and development of the Gelug Sect (Yellow Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism.  Full story
