Tibet afforests 49,520 ha of land in 2009

    BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Tibet afforested 49,520 ha of land last year, surging by 62.9 percent from 2008, according to the Tibet Autonomous Regional Forestry Department.

    Of the total forestry funding, 1.06 billion yuan RMB (155 million U.S. dollars) has arrived, up 67.15 percent year on year.

    Meanwhile, Tibet's projects to protect natural forests and return farmland to woods have been well underway, bringing in 650 million yuan RMB (95.2 million dollars) in incomes for local farmers and herders, 62 percent higher than in 2008.

    The output value of Tibet's forestry rose 12 percent in 2009 to 960 million yuan RMB (140.5 million dollars.

    Moreover, headway has been made in protecting wild animals, nature reserves and wetlands, as well as in preventing forest fires.

Tibet's forest coverage hits 11.31%

    BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Tibet's forest coverage has risen to 11.31 percent, up 1.47 percent over the figure released in the fifth survey of forest resources in 2000, according to Li Yucai, deputy director of the State Forestry Administration.

    Statistics show that since 2001, Tibet has afforested 247,333 ha, brought under control desertified areas of 42,666 ham and regularly taken care of 1.2 million ha of natural forests and 10.13 million ha of ecological forests for public welfare.  Full story

Forest coverage in Lhasa to hit 12% by 2015 

    BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhuanet) -- The forest coverage in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, is expected to reach 12 percent during the "12th Five-Year (2011-2015) Plan for Forestry of Lhasa City."

    Meanwhile, by then, 90 percent of the wetlands and wild animals in Lhasa will also be brought under effective protection, according to the Lhasa City Forestry Bureau.  Full story
