Tibet to offer wireless digital TV service

    BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Tibet will provide wireless digital TV service later this year in four pilot areas, namely, Lhasa, Chamdo, Xigaze and Nyingchi, according to the Tibet Business.

    Different from cable TV, the wireless digital TV falls into different types, including the ground digital broadcasting, mobile digital TV, the China Multimedia Mobile Broadcasting (CMMB) and satellite TV.

    TV viewers now still have to install a set-top box to receive digital TV programs. In the primary stage, they can receive 120 channels at most, said Tao Pengwan, director of the Regional Radio and TV Network Transmission Center.

    Meanwhile, Tibet will also promote the use of cable TV and explore the ways to integrate the telecommunications network, the radio and TV network and the Internet.

    Lhasa had 79,000 cable TV subscribers at the end of 2009 and is expected to have 40,000 more in the future.

Cable TV services availble in Sichuan's Tibetan-inhabited area 

    BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Cable TV service is now accessible to 10,000 residents in Daocheng County and 200,000 non-permanent people in Shangti-la Town, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, according to Sichuan Daily.

    The service has been made possible with the completion of the construction of an optic-fiber cable network. Full story

Satellite TV receiving equipment benefits Tibet's Dengqen residents 
 
    BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A total of 5,345 pieces of satellite TV receiving equipment have been installed in Dengqen County, Chamdo Prefecture, eastern Tibet.

    To enable every family accessible to radio and TV services, the Dingqen County Government began in September to offer such equipment for free to the families in seven townships.  Full story
