KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Malaysian government vows to amend the current copyright law to curb the sale of pirated discs in the country.

Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister, said on Saturday that the Copyright Act 1987would be amended soon in a bid to control the sale of pirated DVDs and VCDs in the country.

He said this after launching the Consumerism Awareness Program in northwest Malaysia's state of Penang on Saturday.

He said that the law to be revised would take action against those buying even only one copy of faked DVD or VCD while the current law could only punish the sellers and those owned more than three copies.

Under the amendment, owners of premises selling pirated DVDs and VCDs would also face legal action, he said.

As one of the proposed amendments being scrutinized by the ministry, the clauses of the law are still being fine-tuned by the ministry and is expected to be tabled in the Parliament in March, he added.
