KATHMANDU, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Nepali people observed the 12th National Earthquake Safety Day (NESD) across the country on Saturday.

The NESD is observed with the slogan "Let's reduce the earthquake risk, enhance the safety of community, and build safer schools, hospitals and houses."

In Lalitpur, 2.8 km east of Kathmandu, some people used an elephant with a red carpet and some model buildings on its back to raise people's awareness on the day and share knowledge and information about safety measures.

NESD has been observed in Nepal on Jan. 16 every year since 1999 which coincides with the 65th anniversary of the last deadly earthquake which rocked Nepal in 1934 and claimed the lives of 8,500 people.
