HOUSTON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- No U.S. states were reporting widespread A/H1N1 flu activity during the first week of 2010, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Friday.

"No states reported widespread influenza activity, nine states reported regional influenza activity, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and 15 states reported local influenza activity, Guam and 24 states reported sporadic influenza activity, and the U.S. Virgin Islands and two states reported no influenza activity," the CDC said on its web site.

In late October, 48 U.S. states reported widespread cases of A/H1N1 flu activity. But since then, there has been a decline across the country.

Although the A/H1N1 flu infections are declining, health officials stress that there could be a resurgence of the disease and urge people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their families.

"Flu is unpredictable, and this flu season is far from over," Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of health and human services, said earlier this week.

"Flu season typically lasts until May, and we don't know whether there will be additional waves of flu illness," she explained, adding that the A/H1N1 virus is still circulating, still dangerous, and there are still lives to be saved.

Meanwhile, visits to doctors for influenza-like illness (ILI) in the United States fell below the national baseline for the first time since late October.

"The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness was 1.9 percent which is below the national baseline of 2.3 percent," the CDC said.

"During the week of Jan. 3-9, 2010, all key indicators (of the A/H1N1 infections) declined compared to the previous week," it added.

The first wave of the A/H1N1 pandemic began in April last year when the strain was discovered. A larger wave started in the late summer.
