AMMAN/JERUSALEM, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- A bomb went off near the Jordanian-Israeli borders Thursday evening, targeting the convoy of Israeli ambassador in Amman, sources from both Amman and Jerusalem said.

    The Amman-based website Ammantimes reported that the blast occurred at about 5:00 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) as the Israeli convoy was heading to Israel, causing no casualties.

    Meanwhile, Israeli news service Ynet confirmed that a roadside bomb went off near a convoy carrying Israeli diplomats in Jordan on Thursday afternoon, without causing any casualties.

    The explosion occurred at sunset about 20 kilometers from the Allenby Bridge border crossing between Israel and Jordan, and the convoy, carrying four Israeli embassy staff members and two security guards on their way from the Jordanian capital of Amman back to Israel, went on with the trip following the blast, according to the report.

    The Israeli ambassador to Jordan, who is assumed to be the prime target, was not in the convoy, added the report.

    The Jordanian authorities have launched an investigation into what the Israeli media referred to as a terrorist attack, and Israeli security officials are also keeping a close eye on the situation.

    Israeli Ha'aretz newspaper however said that two bombs exploded near a car carrying three Israeli diplomats in Jordan on Thursday, with none being hurt.

    Jordan, which signed a peace accord with Israel in 1994, is the only other Arab state beside Egypt that has realized peace with the Jewish state, and is also an important player in the Israeli-Palestinian and Israeli-Arab peace processes.

    Yet Ynet reported that Israeli diplomats in Jordan face an ongoing threat, most likely from Palestinian militants in the country, which has a large Palestinian population.
