SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Two militants of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant outfit and an Indian army trooper were killed Thursday in a gun battle in India-controlled Kashmir, police said.
The gun battle broke out Wednesday evening in village Khazanbal-Tangmarg of district Kulgam, 110 km south of Srinagar, the summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir.
However, the operation was suspended during night following the poor visibility.
"The operation has been concluded. The firing resumed early morning today, during which we have succeeded in killing both the militants. In the entire operation an army trooper also got killed. Besides this another army trooper and a policeman who were injured yesterday are undergoing treatment in the hospital," said Superintendent of police Kulgam, Kesuram Churasiya.
According to details provided by police the village was cordoned following a tip off about the presence of militants there.
The gunfight was triggered after Indian army and police came under fire from the militants who had taken shelter in a residential house.
The fire was returned by the contingents of army and special operations group of police.
Churasiya also claimed that police has recovered two assault rifles, some ammunition, a laptop and other items from the possession of slain militants.
Of the killed militants, one was the commander of HM Pir Panjal range.
HM is the indigenous militant outfit of Kashmir active in the region since 1990.
