    WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced Wednesday she is to cancel her visit to Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia, and return to Washington to deal with the earthquake in Haiti, according to the U.S. State Department.

    The department said in a short statement that Clinton made the decision because of the devastating quake and its severe aftermath. She is to return immediately to Washington from Hawaii.

    The State Department, along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of Defense, bear the brunt of work in the U.S. government's humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti.

U.S. secretary of state postpones visit to New Zealand following strong Haiti earthquake


    WELLINGTON, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has postponed her visit to New Zealand following Tuesday's massive earthquake in Haiti, New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully announced on Thursday.

    McCully said Clinton has promised to reschedule the visit as soon as possible. Full story

U.S. defense secretary delays Australia trip over Haiti earthquake

    WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Wednesday delayed his scheduled trip to Australia to coordinate U.S. relief effort in Haiti, which was struck by a devastating earthquake on Tuesday.

    "Secretary Gates has decided not to travel to Australia this weekend and will instead remain in Washington to continue to manage the department's response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti," Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said in a statement. Full story

Secretary Clinton vows strong U.S. support for Haiti over quake

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the United States will provide strong support to help Haiti deal with a devastating earthquake which struck the Caribbean country on Tuesday.

Clinton, who flew to Honolulu, Hawaii to jumpstart a nine-day Asia-Pacific trip, said she would help to coordinate quake relief effort from the U.S. Pacific Command based in Hawaii. Full story

    MEXICO CITY, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- A major earthquake rocked Haiti on Tuesday and "catastrophic" casualties were feared although no official reports are currently available.

    The magnitude-7.0 quake, the strongest ever recorded in the area, collapsed a hospital in a hillside district of Port-au-Prince, according to local media reports. Full story
