UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Alain Le Roy, the UN under-secretary-general for the peacekeeping operations, told reporters here Wednesday that he can not confirm the reported death of the head of the UN mission in Haiti, Hedi Annabi, but said he was likely still in the rubbles of UN headquarters building in Haiti, which was leveled Tuesday by a devastating earthquake.
"We can confirm that he was in the building at the time," Le Roy said at a press conference here. "He is highly likely in the rubbles but we cannot confirm his death."
Reports quoted senior French and Haitian government officials as saying earlier that Annabi was probably among those who died in the wake of the strong earthquake.
On Wednesday morning, about 10 people were pulled out of rubbles alive, he said.
