ATHENS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Greek presented Monday the government's new plan to change Greece's municipality structure, aiming at modernizing the state's function.

    The plan, named Kallikratis after one of the two architects of the Parthenon, was presented by Minister of Interior, Public Administration and Electronic Governance Giannis Ragoussis to President Karolos Papoulias.

    According to great Greek historian Ploutarch, Kallikratis worked on at least two monuments, the Parthenon and the City's protection Walls, on the Acropolis hill.

    Greece's new government chose to name the municipality restructure plan after Kallikratis in order to stress "its revolutionary character," government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis said.

    "From ancient Greece to the 21st century Athens Kallikratis reshapes the country's map," local newspapers commented.

    Ragoussis announced that 13 administrative regions would replace the current 76 prefectures and similar drastic reductions were planned for thousands of municipal corporations.

    According to the government's timetable, the plan will be ratified in May.
