KABUL, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Afghan Defence Ministry will soon take over
charge of the detention center run by the United States military at the Bagram
Airbase north of Afghan capital Kabul.
"The defence ministry and the Afghan National Army will initially take
responsibility of the detention center and eventually transfer it to the
Ministry of Justice," spokesman for the defence ministry Mohammad Zahir Azimi
told a press conference here on Monday.
"Hopefully the handover will take place within few months," Azimi said,
adding that some 750 prisoners are currently held in Bagram detention center.
Amid concerns over human rights abuse in the Bagram prison, Azimi said all
international conventions on prisoners' rights will be
implemented.
