NEW DELHI, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Reigning champion Marin Cilic of Croatia scored a straight set victory to make the semifinals of the Chennai Open tennis tournament on Friday, together with Swiss third seed Stanislas Wawrinka.
World number 14 Cilic downed Colombian Santiago Giraldo 7-6 (7-3) and 6-1 in one hour 38 minutes while Olympic doubles winner Wawrinka played for two hours to beat German Michael Berrer 7-6 and 6-4 after rain delayed the matches.
In the semifinals on Saturday, second seed Cilic will meet Serbian fourth seed Janko Tipsarevic and world number 21 Wawrinka plays Israeli fifth seed Dudi Sela.
Cilic, 21, recovered from 4-1 down in the first set to win the tiebreak 7-3, and made quick work of his opponent in the second.
Against Wawrinka, Berrer who ranked 74th in the world, came back from a break down at 4-2 with a series of forehand winners to force the opening set into a tiebreak which Wawrinka clinched 7-5,and broke Berrer in the seventh game before serving out the match.
In other quarterfinals, Tipsarevic beat Dutchman Thiemo de Bakker 7-5, 7-5 and Sela downed Slovakian Lukas Lacko 7-6 and 7-5.
