WELLINGTON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's southern South Island was shaken by an earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale on Wednesday night. The quake caused no casualties or damages.
The quake happened at 10:48 p.m. local time Wednesday (09:48 GMT Wednesday) and was centered 460 km southwest of the southern city of Invercargill at a depth of 12 km, the New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported.
It said the quake was likely to have been felt in the southern South Island.
