LUANDA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Diarrhoea killed 107 people in Angola's coastal Kwanza Sul province in 2009, largely due to poor sanitary conditions and the lack of clean drinking water, the official news agency Angop reported on Wednesday.

    Citing Henrique Silvestre, the head of the provincial health department, Angop said a total of 25,795 cases of diarrhoea were recorded in the province last year, and that the most affected districts included Sub, Porto Amboim and Mussende.

    He said the outspread of the disease in the province reflects the lack of care from the population in treating water and rubbish. He urged the local population to treat water before drinking and deposit rubbish in appropriate sites before burning.

    Diarrhoea is one of the major killer diseases affecting the 16.5 million population of Angola, 60 percent of whom live under the poverty line or on less than two U.S. dollars a day.
