BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares opened higher on the first trading day of the new year Monday with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.38 percent to open at 3,289.75 points.

    The Shenzhen Component Index also opened 0.48 percent higher at 13,766.10 points.
